If you want makeup that looks natural while still looking polished and professional this is for you.
Natural-looking makeup does not actually mean wearing “weak” or watered-down makeup products - it means applying it in a very intentional and expert way - so that you can get beautiful results that don’t look “makeupy”.
Many don’t realise actually more skill involved in natural looking makeup - not necessarily less makeup steps.
There are a few simple but little-known techniques that I use to create makeup that looks beautiful, polished and professional without looking gunky on my celebrity clients.
In this guide you’ll learn:
•How to create natural-looking makeup - step-by-step
• My secret hacks to achieve ultra-natural looking results on my celebrities
•How to avoid heavy “makeupy” makeup
•How to look polished without looking made up
Step 1: Create Soft Luminosity
Ok… This might surprise you but I do luminizer first - before foundation…
And so do other top makeup artists I know.
Applying luminiser first Is one of the best tips I can give you to make makeup look far more natural (and beautiful!) than almost any other trick.
Healthy looking skin naturally has subtle luminosity (shine).
The main reason makeup does not look natural - when it doesn’t - is because it lacks luminosity.
Use a luminizer before applying foundation to create a very natural “lit from within” glow.
Apply lightly to:
•Cheekbones
• Outer forehead (on the protruding bones)
•Over the nose (over your favourite part of your nose - whether that be the bridge or the tip)
Soft luminosity keeps skin looking fresh.
Step 2: Keep the Skin Looking Like Skin
Unlike most advice - I do not recommend low-coverage products like BB Crème or tinted moisturiser.
Why? These usually do the opposite of what we’re trying to achieve - they mean a thicker layer of product is sitting and moving around on the skin — with little or no result
My hack:
Use tiny amounts of high-coverage foundation but spread it far. (It helps to use a really professional foundation brush.)
Like… I’m talking a rice-grain sized amount of high-coverage foundation.
If you want more coverage, you can always add another ultra thin layer
This gives you flattering coverage while makeup looks “barely there.”
It means makeup doesn’t “slip-slidey” around all day. And means makeup does not look gunky.
In short - far more naturally looking, while still giving an even look to the skin
Step 3: Define the Eyes - Softly
For natural and professional looking makeup I usually use of two methods:
- My hack for using eyeliner as eyeshadow - this is an especially fast, flattering and a natural-looking trick
- Or… use one flattering eyeshadow colour - usually a nuetral colour darker than the skin - with or without adding eyeliner
Option 1. My Eyeliner as Eyeshadow Hack:
This creates an very blended and natural look with little effort
- Apply a dark brown eyeliner into the base of the eyelashes - avoid getting too much on the lid - keep it close the the lashes.
- Then, using a soft fluffy brush, very quickly massage the the eyeliner into a flattering eyeshadow shape - before the eyeliner sets.
- Repeat until you have the desired look
- Add an extra layer of eyeliner at the end as actual eyeliner to intensify the lashes
Option 2. Eyeshadow
Most people suit having an eyeshadow that is darker than their skin tone — applied to the fleshy or hooded part of the eye (the crease) to “carve out” bone structure. (To really understand exactly how to do this on yourself my may be interested in my online class)
Some women do prefer to use a lighter eyeshadow instead - but this is applied to a different way to the darker eyeshadow.
If you’re using an eyeshadow that is lighter than your skin colour, you will usually want to place it in the very centre of the eyelid - the most protruding part of the eyelid. And possibly into the inner eye/ tear-duct area, too.
(Once again, for really clear easy instructions how to do this, take my online program)
Step 4: Add Some Radiant Colour
Once again, to like to use a teeny-tiny amount of highly-pigment colour - spread far using a fluffy pro-quality brush.
If the makeup is for outdoors, I might add some bronzer as well (using the same brush)
This gives some extra “life” to the face
Step 5: Choose a Go-To Lip Colour
Swipe on your favourite lip colour or gloss
There is literally too much to say here about lip colours but the rule of thumb is simply use one that YOU like and feel comfortable with
Final Tip
Natural-looking makeup is usually the result of intentional blending and thin layers.
